Deleted Scenes
Presented here are deleted scenes from various episodes. The most common reason for deleting a scene is that it causes the episode to run long, but other reasons may include the scene changes the pace of the episode or that the scene isn’t necessary to advance the storyline. It is interesting to see what was cut, and then form one's own opinion as to the correctness of the decisions.

Below are portions from actual script drafts placed before and after the deleted scenes and are for reference as to where the cut scene would have been in the episode. The text is formatted to look as it would in an actual script.

A large recreation room set was built for this unused scene but was later used in the episode And the Children Shall Lead and again in the episode
Is There in Truth No Beauty?
According to the slates, the first scene presented below was filmed on Monday, June 19, 1968. Another slate shown near the end of this script excerpt shows Elaan’s quarters dated June 5, which was shot five days earlier. Shooting out of sequence is typical of television and motion picture production. For instance all of Elaan's quarters scenes are filmed one day, then all of the recreational room scenes on another day, etc.

Elaan of Troyius
The scripts deleted footage begins with INT. RECREATION ROOM. The scene opens with a dolly move across a sun bather. You can see her head to the right of Shatner. Later in the script there is a note to Irving Feinberg, the propmaster, to provide real food. Towards the end the script follows what was televised with the exception of Elaan's comment on the music.

Rev. script 5/27/68 STAR TREK "Elaan of Troyius"

Kirk (cont'd)
(to McCoy)
Bones, how long will it take to get him back on his feet?

McCoy
Be a few days at least, maybe a week.

PETRI
Here you put me, Captain. Here I will stay.
I have nothing further to say to you.

Petri turns his face to the wall. Kirk looks at McCoy, shrugs helplessly, goes out. Uhura and McCoy follow him.

INT. CORRIDOR - MOVING SHOT

Kirk is furious.

McCoy
I don't know what to do with him, Jim He's as bad as she is.
They're all pig-headed stubborn. And they just plain hate each other.

UHURA
You got to admit he's got a better reason to hate. Can't you
explain to the High Commissioner that it's just...

KIRK
High Commissioners don't accept explanations -- only results.
How do you handle a woman like that?

UHURA
You just stay away from her. There's no way --

They are passing a set of double doors marked "Recreation Room".
Strange and haunting MUSIC comes out as a Crewman exits.

UHURA
(continuing)
Except, Captain -- Everybody knows the old saying that
music hath charms to soothe the savage beast.

KIRK
It might be worth a try.
He enters.

INT. RECREATION ROOM
It resemble a psychedelic arboretum. The curve of the ship's bulkheads can be seen beyond the tops of trees. Flowers of all kinds flourish. A fountain sparkles in a lawn of pink grass. Members of the crew sit on benches and flat rocks, talking or playing three-dimensional chess. A group exercises. (TUMBLERS) Spock sits alone with the Vulcan lyre on his lap. The lyre has two sets of strings, the bass at a 45° angle to the Vertical treble. Spock plays another strange rhythm.

KIRK
What's that music your 're playing?

UHURA
It's Beautiful.

SPOCK
That was a simple scale. I was merely tuning the instrument.

(digs)
Second prize. Who took first prize, Spock?

SPOCK
My Father.

KIRK
Can you play a love song?

SPOCK
A mating song. In ancient times, the Vulcan lyre was used to
stimulate the fury of the mating time.

KIRK
We'll need some stimulation -- very fast. The Federation High Commissioner's
on his way to Troyius expecting to attend a wedding.

SPOCK
I would say the chances of a happy union are somewhat
diminished by the Dohlman's recent action.

McCOY
Since she's knifed her teacher, what are you going to do about training
the Dohlman in Troyian etiquette?

SPOCK
Appoint a teacher to take his place.

McCOY
(startled)
You Spock?

SPOCK
Certainly not. Logic dictates that the Dohlman will only
accept the person of highest rank aboard this vessel.

They all look at Kirk.

KIRK
(take a deep breath)
Spock give me two minutes and then pipe that music of yours into
the Dohlman's quarters.

He exits. Spock looks after him, surprised.

McCOY
If you're going to serenade that one, you'd better put some real emotion into it.

SPOCK
Doctor, emotion has no part in music. The vibrations are a precise mathematical formula which --

McCoy
Spock - just play.

McCoy exits.

NEW ANGLE

Spock starts to play again. Uhura sighs deeply.

UHURA
Mr. Spock, that music really gets to you.

SPOCK
Yes, I find it relaxing.

UHURA
Relaxing? It's... I don't know what to call it -- but
relaxing's not the word.

SPOCK
Most interesting. I suppose it works differently on
non-Vulcan nervous systems.

UHURA
I'd certainly like to learn how to play that.

SPOCK
I'd be glad to give you the theory. The mathematics are somewhat
complex. To my knowledge, no non-Vulcan has eve mastered the skill.
You see, we Vulcans have natural rhythm.

UHURA
Uhura looks impressed.

INT. ELAAN'S QUARTERS - CLOSE ON ELAAN

as she eats from a sumptuous table. (Real food, Irving.)
Her table manners put Henry the Eighth to shame.

ELAAN
So, Ambassador Petri will recover. That is too bad.

CAMERA PULLS BACK TO REVEAL Kirk sitting opposite her. He is appalled by her manner of eating, but say nothing about that, yet. She throws a chicken leg behind her and takes a swig of wine from a bottle.

ELAAN
You've delivered your message, you have my leave to go.

KIRK
I'd like nothing better, your Glory...but your impetuous nature has...

ELAAN
The Troyian pig was in my quarters without permission. Therefore I stabbed him.
Just to Troyian would have been enough.

KIRK
You Elasians pride yourselves on being a warrior people. You must understand discipline... be able to give and follow orders. My orders are to take you to Troyius to be married and to see that you're trained in Troyian customs.

ELAAN
Troyians disgust me. Any contact with them makes me feel soiled.

KIRK
It's been my experience that the prejudices people have about each other disappear once they get to know each other.

He reacts as the SOUND of the Vulcan music starts filtering in.

ELAAN
It is not my experience.

KIRK
In any case we are still faced with a problem. Your indoctrination pertaining to the customs and manners of the Troyians.

ELAAN
I have eliminated the problem.

KIRK
You eliminated the teacher. The problem remains the same...

ELAAN
(smiles grimly)
And how do we solve it?

KIRK
With a new teacher.

ELAAN
Oh.

She caresses her dagger as she stares at him. The Vulcan music becomes louder.

ELAAN
(continuing)
What is that sickening sound?

The script continues as originally broadcast.
